Should NYC Residents Prepare for a Longer, Messier Winter?

Last winter caught a lot of us off guard. The salt stains, the endless slush, the grime that somehow made its way into every corner of our apartments. And if forecasts are right, we might be in for more of the same this year.

Meteorologists predict NYC will see 15-20 inches of snow this winter – below our normal 25-30 inches, but still enough to create daily mess. They’re also forecasting 1-3 nor’easters that could dump heavy snow in short bursts.

So yeah, it’s worth preparing now instead of dealing with the chaos later.

Why Even Moderate Snow Hits NYC Apartments Hard

It’s not about total snowfall. It’s about the freeze-thaw cycles that create slush puddles on every corner. The salt spread on sidewalks that clings to boots, bags, and coat hems. The fact that we’re stuck indoors more, tracking all that grime through our apartments.

Every time you come home, you’re bringing the street with you. Multiply that by everyone in your apartment, plus visitors, and your floors need cleaning daily instead of weekly.

Salt Residue Is the Real Problem

The worst part isn’t visible dirt. It’s salt residue that builds up on hardwood and tile, leaving white streaks regular mopping doesn’t fix. It seeps into grout lines and damages floor finishes if left too long.

Your apartment’s entryway becomes ground zero. Wet coats, dripping boots, salt-stained bags – everything piles up in that first five feet inside your door. Most NYC apartments don’t have mudrooms, so that mess doesn’t stay contained. Having a declutter system helps keep winter gear organized instead of scattered everywhere.

What Actually Works

Get ahead now before the worst weather hits. Place heavy-duty doormats inside and outside your door. Keep cleaning supplies right by the entryway – not under the sink where you’ll forget about them.

Wipe down floors every few days minimum. Focus on entryways, kitchens, and bathrooms where moisture accumulates fastest. Weekly cleaning won’t cut it when salt and slush are constant.

Stock up on microfiber cloths and floor cleaner that handles salt buildup. You don’t want to run out mid-January when you actually need them.

I have been growing and building in a service industry since I started working. First on the service side doing construction, roofing then shifting to waxing, carpets and floor care. I noticed that many cleaning companies wouldn’t even answer their calls and decided to build a company that not only answers clients calls but also their needs. I founded House Keep Up to give clients a place that listens and technicians avenue to showcase their skills. My hobbies are cooking, DIY, gaming and technology, music and movies. All of it revolves around people that create and make these hobbies possible. My business and people involved in it are the reason I wake up daily with resolve and look forward to my day.
